Sjako de Meesterboef (2023)

"Sjako the Master Thief" is an engaging musical production and book publication by De Toneelmakerij and Theater De Krakeling, presented both in Amsterdam classrooms for school children and on stage at the theater. This captivating story brings to life a fascinating piece of Amsterdam's history through the story of Jacob Muller — popularly known as Sjako — a real historical figure. A book adaptation of the performance has been created from the script.

Living in 18th-century Amsterdam, Sjako was a notorious thief who, after his death, gained a Robin Hood-like status. He exclusively targeted the wealthy, generously sharing his spoils with his comrades. A master of disguise and escape, he led his Black gang dressed in white pirate attire and remained tight-lipped during his arrest.

A commemorative plaque on Elandsgracht 73 marks the location of his stronghold, and the Amsterdam Museum displays his burglary tools.

The story of the performance has been adapted into an exciting read-aloud book, "Sjako the Master Thief," written by Lot Houtepen with illustrations by Richard Kofi and Tiara Alifa Putri Pratomoaji. The book is available for €13.50 (including shipping) from Theater De Krakeling.
