Muren van West (2022)
This mural is part of the project Muren van West, an initiative by Stadsdeel West to create a collection of murals spread throughout Bos en Lommer, Amsterdam West. The murals tell the story of the neighborhood and its residents.
This work by former City Illustrator Richard Kofi is inspired by the stories of the residents of De Boeg care center and users of the House of the Neighborhood in the same building, often elderly Amsterdammers. Thirty residents of De Boeg care center of Cordaan had to leave their apartments because the building could no longer accommodate the heavy care they needed. Despite the building not meeting the necessary standards for adequate care, the decision to move caused unrest among the residents. This mural commemorates those elders who were displaced, highlighting their resilience and strength in the face of such upheaval.
Kofi aimed to make this generation visible and give them the stage they deserve: "Elders are an essential part of our society. With this work, I want to celebrate their presence and legacy."
Above the 'residents,' there is a floating eye. "The eye can be seen as a resident or partner who is no longer with us, or as a memory brought back to life. These are the stories I heard during the walks."
This mural is a testament to the strength and resilience of the elder generation, acknowledging their vital contributions to our community. By capturing their stories and celebrating their lives, Richard Kofi’s work embodies the spirit of emancipation and liberation, honoring the wisdom and legacy of our elders and empowering them through visibility and recognition.
This mural stands as a tribute to their enduring impact and the rich tapestry of experiences that shape our collective history. It also serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges they face and the need for compassionate care and support.
