We bought a world receiver at the thrift store, the same model my father used to keep up with global news. Through this world receiver, we hear voices of newscasters, musicians, poets, activists, fishermen, role models, translators, astronauts, ancestors, alter egos, and other spirits. They wonder what we are searching for, just as I always wondered what he was searching for.
The world receiver serves as a portal for the diaspora, connecting us to a multitude of voices and experiences from around the globe. It becomes a conduit for stories and sounds that transcend geographical boundaries, echoing the collective memory and aspirations of diasporic communities. This portal bridges the past and present, offering a space where histories and futures converge. It allows us to listen deeply, to find connection and meaning in the myriad voices that shape our understanding of the world.
OMSTAND × KUNSTPODIUM T Present: World Receiver
The exhibition World Receiver is a collaborative effort between Omstand and the Apprentice Master program of Kunstpodium T from Tilburg. In this showcase from the Apprentice Master season '21/'22, four talented young artists are paired with an experienced contemporary artist. Together, they create new works and curate their own exhibition. Kunstpodium T partners with various guest locations across the Netherlands and Belgium for this project, with Omstand serving as the guest location for World Receiver.
In this unique exhibition, the collaboration between emerging and established artists fosters a dynamic exchange of ideas and practices. The world receiver becomes a metaphorical and literal device through which these artists explore themes of communication, heritage, and the search for identity. The exhibition invites visitors to engage with the intricate web of voices and stories that shape our global landscape, reflecting the diverse and interconnected nature of contemporary art and culture.
DEELNEMENDE KUNSTENAARS
Antonino De Caro (It, 1997) Grew up in the Sicilian inland. At the age of 19, he moved to the Netherlands, where he received his education at the HKU in Utrecht. His process as a student brought to the surface a body of work made of self-made symbols and autobiographical references. The awareness of the cultural identity he carries on his shoulders plays an important role in the making of his works. De Caro allows the viewer to peek into his world, where surprisingly, we find a mirror –> INSTA @antonino_decaro_art
Laila Saber Rodriguez
is an Egyptian and Mexican artist who uses experimental video and film and combines it in installations. She creates fictive worlds blended with real events to dissolve the legitimacy of linear time and truth, offering alternative visions of reality. The installations take the viewer through a journey, where you are traversing between relatable and real, to mythological and fictive landscapes; inviting you to go on a personal endeavour. Niels Roest
Repelsteeltje (NL)
graduated last year from the Willem de Kooning, Rotterdam. Mainly active as an anarchafeminist activist, their art focuses on maintaining and expanding their activist community. They also run the radioshow ¨Sex with benefits¨ on Worm radio, where they discuss subjects around sex and identity from an intersectional perspective with a (for now) anonymous friend –> INSTA @r3p3lst33ltj3
